Autumn is a quieter season in the Westfjords. Summer visitors have mostly gone home, schools are back in session, and daily life settles into its usual rhythm. For travellers, September and October can be an enjoyable time to visit. The colors in the landscape begin to change, the roads are less busy, and there's often more time and space to enjoy the places you visit.

The road up to the Bolafjall viewing platform is now closed to vehicle traffic for the season.

On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse passed over the Westfjords. It was a rare event, and one that had attracted considerable attention for months beforehand. Visitors came from Iceland and abroad, while people living in the region made plans to watch from towns, hillsides, beaches and viewpoints across the Westfjords.

The Westfjords recently welcomed Blanche Montemard, Icelandair’s official “Really Bad Photographer”, as part of the airline’s international campaign of the same name.

The viewing platform at the top of Bolafjall is now open, offering one of the most striking views in the Westfjords. From the platform, visitors can take in wide views over Ísafjarðardjúp, the surrounding mountains, and the open sea. Please drive carefully, respect local conditions, and enjoy the view.
