Sign about the history of the swimming pool and school in Reykjanes near Ísafjarðardjúp

July 5 at 15:00-17:00

On the occasion of 100 years since the concrete swimming pool was built in Reykjanes at Ísafjarðardjúp and 90 years since the school began there, two historical signs will be unveiled in Reykjanes on Saturday, July 5th at 3 pm. Coffee will be served. Be welcome!

The project is supported by the descendants of Aðalsteinn Eiríksson and Bjarnveig Ingimundardóttir, the first school principals in Reykjanes (1934-1944), and Páll Aðalsteinsson and Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir, the school principals (1952-1966), together with Sögumiðlun and the grantees The Westfjords Development Fund, Háafell, HS Orka and the town of Ísafjörður.

Swimming lessons were offered in Reykjanes since the first half of the 19th century, at first in a turf pool, but the concrete swimming pool was built in 1925 and was expanded twice in the following years. The school in Reykjanes was the regional center in Ísafjarðardjúp for more than half a century, from the school's founding in 1934 until the school closed in 1991.

The historical signs about the swimming pool and the school in Reykjanes will be located in front of the school. The signs have QR codes that link to information and pictures on the Reykjanes website: https://reykjaneswestfjords.is/saga/
