Ásta's Summer Concert Series: Hraunskirkja in Dýrafjörður

July 11 at 20:00-21:30

Price description

2.500.-

This summer, I’ll be performing a concert series in three small churches in the northern Westfjords of Iceland.

The second concert in the series will take place in the remote Hraunskirkja church in Keldudalur, Dýrafjörður.

Keldudalur was once a thriving valley but was abandoned in 1987. At one point, there were plans to demolish the church, but the National Museum of Iceland instead undertook its restoration. Today, the church is under the museum’s care and is generally closed to the public — making this a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in abandoned valleys and rural churches (like myself).

The setup will be simple: voice, viola, and guitar. It has long been a dream of mine to perform in this beautiful church, so rich in history, and I’m very much looking forward to it.

Please note: Hraunskirkja in Keldudalur is located approximately 15 km from Þingeyri, along the southern side of Dýrafjörður. There are no restroom facilities, running water, mobile phone service, internet connection, or electricity at the site.

This concert series is supported by the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær.

Ásta is an Icelandic singer-songwriter and violist based in Ísafjörður. A classically trained violist, she graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and has performed as a soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. A multi-award-winning artist, her latest accolade is the Kraumur Music Award for her acclaimed album Blokkarbarn and was widely praised as one of the standout Icelandic releases of 2025. Blending folk songwriting with the rich sound of the viola, Ásta creates intimate performances rooted in storytelling, place, and memory.
