The Old Herring Factory in Ingólfsfjörður

Ingólfsfjörður is the next fjord to the north from Norðurfjörður. In the fjord there is little low land, which is common in many fjords in the Westfjords. The main landmarks in the fjords are the mountains Kálfatindur, Eyrarfell and Glyssa and the old deserted Herring Factory. The factory was constructed by the company Ingólfur hf. during the years of 1942-1944. The main reason why the factory was built was because of the growing herring stock coming in to Húnaflói bay. The fishing failed some years after the factory was built and therefore the factory was closed in 1952.

When you drive from Norðurfjörður, you drive through the factory site on your way to Ófeigsfjörður. The road is in bad condition and only accessible by 4x4 cars. The area is really charming and the factory site especially. It's easy to get lost in the quantity of buildings and concrete in the area. The emptiness and the remoteness of the area give you the opportunity to connect to yourself.
