Nature and the ocean has always played a big part in the lives of the people that live in Suðureyri. Birdlife is growing in and around Suðureyri and that you can best see in the species at the pond where you enter the town. Those who prefer more fish-friendly activities can feed the cod in the pond. Suðureyri has in recent years taken big steps towards an environmentally friendly and sustainable policy, all from catching the fish to serving it to the customer.

Suðureyri and surrounding area have good hiking trails all around. On the opposite side of the fjord from Suðureyri is an old farm called Norðureyri. From there you can keep on going to Galtarviti and even further to Skálavík if there is interest. If you want to hike over the flat mountains there is an old road going over Botnsheiði to Ísafjörður but a bit more in middle of nowhere there is Grárófuheiði over to Bolungarvík. This list in nowhere near half of where you can hike. If you need more info about the hikes that you can do, just ask the friendly locals. 


Iceland has an abundance of lakes and rivers teeming with salmon and trout and attract many anglers. The opportunities for participating are limitless.

Bird Watching

There are many places in the Westfjords of Iceland that are ideal for bird watching. Látrarbjarg cliff is the largest bird cliff in Europe and gives you fantastic views over the puffins. But there are also other places such as Vigur island, Grímsey island and Reykhólar that are amazing spots for bird enthusiast.

The Lagoon

If you're all in for the real nature experiance and the family wants to do something magnificent then you should talk to the people at Fisherman, buy a bag of fish and go feed the cod in the lagoon. You could even fish them out of the lagoon using it as bait.
