Thingeyri
Þingeyri at Dýrafjörður is a beautiful village that is located on a spit of land bearing the same name. The village is a part of the Ísafjörður town municipality that includes also Hnífsdalur, Flateyri and Suðureyri. Þingeyri is 49km away from Ísafjörður on a paved road.  Þingeyri is 409km away from Reykjavík when driving the southern part of the Westfjords and then passing the heaths Hrafnseyrarheiði and Dynjandisheiði.

Some people say the fjord Dýrafjörður is one of Westfjord’s most beautiful fjords. Judging its beauty compared to other fjords in the Westfjords is beyond the scope of this article, but what can be said is that Dýrafjörður is a beautiful fjord, has its own unique characteristics, and Þingeyri is such a nice village that a visit is well worth the effort.

Arriving from Önundarfjörður across the heath Gemlufallsheiði you get a view of mountains, often referred to as the Westfjord’s Alps, including the highest mountain in the Westfjords, Kaldbakur. Hiking up the mountain Kaldbakur is easy, even for novice hikers. Hikers that have reached the peak of Kaldbakur in bright weather say the view is phenomenal with a view over the Westfjords and even further.

A variety of services is available for tourists at Þingeyri such as Þingeyri’s Swimming Pool. The swimming pool is relatively new with hot tubs. It is the ideal place to rest tired feet after long hikes or to wash away the dust from the gravel roads.

At Þingeyri is located the oldest working mechanic workshop in Iceland. The workshop bears the name of Guðmundur J. Sigurðsson and established in the year 1913.

A short distance from the village is Þingeyri’s golf course. The course is nine holes making it perfect to stick around for a circle or two with the Westfjord’s Alps in the audience.

Þingeyri is the location for the Viking project. Recently the locals built a Viking ship at the location. Anyone interested in the lifestyle and history of the ancient Vikings should pay a visit to the Viking project at Þingeyri and perhaps discover the hidden dormant Viking in all of us.
