Suðureyri in Súgandafjörður is a small village 23km away from Ísafjörður and it is an ideal destination for all travelling the area. Suðureyri is a part of the town of Ísafjörður that includes also Flateyri, Þingeyri and Hnífsdalur.
Suðureyri is a fine example of an Icelandic fishing village. The life and times of Suðureyri is fishing in a positive and wide perspective. Throughout the ages, the locals have brought catch from the sea and prevailed with elegance through the difficulties of the fishing industry.
Recently the locals of Suðureyri seized a new opportunity in the travel and fishing industry. Thousands of sea anglers from Europe arrive yearly at Suðureyri to experience sea angling in the fierce arms of the king of the sea, Ægir.
Suðureyri is one of the few districts in the Westfjords that have access to hot water. A relatively new swimming pool is at Suðureyri heated with hot water from the earth below.
Each year in July the locals of Suðureyri celebrate life with a festival called Sæluhelgi. People of all ages and nationalities are welcome to visit Suðureyri and enjoy entertainment presented and performed by the people of Suðureyri. Strange fishing competition is among the highlights of the Sæluhelgi festival.
